5 Small Acts of Self Love Busy Moms Can Do Today

Are you a busy mom running around doing everything for everyone else all the time, but not doing enough for herself?

After giving birth, I hopped on the post-partum depression wagon. I was parenting solo 24/7, breastfeeding for what seemed like 24 hours a day, rebuilding a camper (HAHA! That's a funny story...), and building a business from scratch... and it was hard af. I wasn't giving myself enough love.

Slowly, I decided that it was time to get my shit together and start caring about myself again... otherwise I was gonna lose my shit!

I had to find ways to calm and center myself, so I could feel better in general, be a better mom and a better business woman.

We will be practicing these things and more in my Sprout With the Moon Program starting on each new moon!

I invite you to create more time and space for yourself with these 5 simple techniques:

1) Give yourself 10 minutes every morning to center yourself through meditation.

Ever feel like your mind is spinning out of control with thoughts? Things that happened in the past? Things that have yet to happen? About that thing you said at lunch?

Meditation can calm your mind, and bring your focus back to the present moment. While it might seem impossible, or even uncomfortable at first, the mind's ability to focus on the present becomes easier with practice.

Some benefits of meditation include:

  • Clearing the mind

  • Becoming calmer in stressful situations

  • Improved coping mechanisms

  • Improve overall quality of life

  • Becoming more present

  • More positive outlook

  • Improved patience and creativity

  • Becoming more self-aware

Meditation can even acts as treatment for some chronic illnesses (1,2,3). Most illnesses are caused by stress. Changing the mindset to become calmer and more positive has been proven to reverse dis-ease!

Set aside at least 10 minutes each and every morning to calm your mind and become grounded.

2) Write in your journal, daily.

Journaling is powerful medicine for your body, mind and spirit! It's been proven to improve your ability to cope with traumatic events, increase your ability to learn, improve communication skills, improve sleep and cultivates a calmer mind (4).

You can use your journal in a variety of ways:

  • releasing energy/thoughts that no longer serve you

  • creative expression

  • manifesting

  • showing gratitude

  • as a therapist- get it off your chest!!

If we internalize things, this could cause problems later. So, getting thoughts out of your head and onto the paper can be very healing and cathartic. If you don't have anyone to tell, writing it down is almost as good! If you really want to release heavy thoughts, you can rip the page out and burn the message in a candle (and fire proof area, making sure all embers are extinguished- be safe).

If you have trouble thinking of what to write in your journal, check out my journal prompts that will help you get the creative juices flowing!

3) Take 10 minutes in the morning to do some yoga.

Yoga, or "union", refers to the union of body and mind. It's a great way to warm up your body, calm your mind and connect to your breath. Doing yoga in the morning provides lasting benefits throughout the day!

Some of the benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety (5)

  • Improved sleep

  • Reduced muscle tension

  • Treatment for many medical conditions

  • Allergy and asthma symptom relief (6)

  • Lower heart rate and blood pressure

  • Improved sense of well-being

  • Increased strength and flexibility

  • Slowed aging process

  • Helps with quitting smoking (7)

Set aside at least 10 minutes every morning to treat yourself to some yoga!

4) Put on your favorite song and DANCE!

Music has an undeniable power to change up the vibe. If you're ever feeling low energy and need a boost, put on your favorite song and dance it out!

Here are some benefits of dancing:

  • Mood booster

  • Creative expression

  • Improved balance and cognition

  • Decrease anxiety/stress

  • Improve self-esteem and psychological well-being (8)

  • Parts of the brain that control memory and skills show growth (9)

  • Increases strength and cardiovascular health

Even dancing to ONE song during break time can change your mood. But, if you're feeling up to it, throw yourself (and your kids) a dance party!! Make a playlist or check out this one on Spotify!

Have fun!

5) Chug water when you first wake up and throughout the day!

It's SO important to stay hydrated! In the midst of our busy lives, we often can forget. Dehydration can cause varying body temperature control, reduced motivation, and increased fatigue (10).

Start every day by drinking a nice, tall glass of water! If you're lucky enough to have lemon or lime, squeeze half in your water to balance your pH and get the digestive juices flowing!

Some benefits of drinking a LOT of water:

  • Maximizes physical performance

  • Significantly improves energy levels and brain function

  • Prevents and treats headaches

  • Improves digestion

  • Can help with weight loss

  • Boosts mood!

If you can get it from a spring, or at least non-chlorinated and non-fluoridated that's best!
